On 7 May 2026 the University of Agder hosted a panel discussion on “Academic Freedom in a Globalised Knowledge System”.

The event explored the growing challenges facing academic freedom in democratic societies.




 

Speakers underlined that academic freedom is not only a concern for universities, but a cornerstone of democracy requiring sustained international cooperation, legal protection, and institutional courage.

The panel discussion was opened by the Rector of the University of Agder Professor Sunniva Whittaker.
 

The discussion, moderated by Professor Cathrine Edelhard Tømte from University of Agder  brought together Professor Ivanka Popovic, Vice-President of the European University Association and former Rector of the University of Belgrade, together with representatives from the University of Agder, including Vito Laterza, Associate Professor and Johan Erik Andersen, PhD candidate.
 

The Council of Europe Education Department was represented by Catherine Dolgova Dreyer, Head of Higher and Further Education, who shared the results of the Council of Europe’s work in this field and perspectives on how to better ensure legal protection of academic freedom in Europe.
 

The event formed part of the Democracy Week in Kristiansand.
